About The Course

The FIBE3 CDT, in close partnership with its industry partners, aims to develop the next generation of PhD graduates to champion the urgent, complex, inter-connected and cross-disciplinary transition to net zero infrastructure.

The FIBE3 CDT 1+3 MRes/PhD programme will transform students’ potential by equipping them with the knowledge, skills and qualities to collaboratively engineer the infrastructure that will unlock net zero through conducting world-class, cutting-edge and user-need focused training and research to lead the design and implementation of the infrastructure net zero agenda in the UK.

The PhD topics will be generated annually from the FIBE3 Roadmap for recruitment and students will be recruited to specific projects with industry sponsorship. The PhD experience will be strengthened with secondments to the industry, academic and government and wider cohort engagements at national and international levels.

The MRes Year

The overall aim of the MRes year is to provide the cohort with the necessary breadth of background knowledge and skills, both technical and non-technical, to successfully execute their PhD projects and transition into the future leaders in net zero infrastructure.

This necessarily implies equipping them with a holistic perspective on both problem and solution spaces within net zero infrastructure, a solid understanding of relevant current and developing technologies, an acute awareness of the practical hurdles of implementation in industry and society, and a consciousness of the regulatory and policy landscape.

The MRes year will be co-delivered equally with our industry partners through leadership and participation in core modules CM1 and CM3, mini-project and MRes projects, as a shared responsibility to shape the cohort’s appreciation of industry needs, drivers and challenges.

The first two terms (6 months) of the MRes year will focus on taught modules, project work and cohort building activities, while the latter half will focus on the MRes project and extended cohort training activities.

PhD Research (year 2 - 4)

By the start of the 3-year PhD, each student will have acquired a strong skills foundation through cohort and personalised training, carried out background and exploratory studies and generated a detailed plan of their PhD work programme in collaboration with their academic and industry supervisors.

To ensure delivery to meet user needs, the student will meet at least monthly with their academic and industry supervisors and agree half-yearly outward-facing deliverables. FIBE3 PhD students will spend ~80% of their time on their core technical research topic, with the remaining ~20% devoted to wider aligned research training activities namely:

  • cohort integration studies evolving around the FIBE3 Roadmap,
  • secondment to the industry partner to focus on application of the PhD work to industry-relevant projects;
  • activities linked with the wider FIBE3 industry partners throughout the PhD years to continue to align the PhD work to industry needs;
  • secondment to a national academic institution via the industry partner;
  • secondment at an international academic organisation,
  • engagement with policy makers and relevant stakeholders and
  • further transferrable, RRI, TR and professional upskilling.

The objective is to enrich the students’ PhD research experience and ensure wider and stronger impact, application and benefits to the industry partners and to society.
