EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Future Infrastructure and Built Environment: Unlocking Net Zero (FIBE3 CDT)

The second CM3 workshop, focusing on the CDT theme of Existing and Disruptive/New Technologies was held in collaboration with Sam Stanier, (Cambridge University), Scott Whyte (Geowynd) and Joe Hilton (SLPE). It explored key advancements and challenges in offshore wind energy infrastructure.

The speakers provided an in-depth analysis of site selection for offshore wind farms, emphasising geotechnical considerations, foundation types, and the importance of optimising site investigations to reduce costs and development timelines. They also discussed structural design principles, focusing on wind turbine substructures, environmental loading, and areas for future research.

The workshop concluded with a hands-on assignment in which students have to assess three potential sites for offshore wind farm development. They were tasked with evaluating site conditions, selecting an optimal location, and estimating the expected energy capacity. This exercise encouraged the practical application of technical knowledge in real-world decision-making scenarios.
