EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Future Infrastructure and Built Environment: Unlocking Net Zero (FIBE3 CDT)

The FIBE3 CDT - Unlocking Net Zero initiative, launched in October 2024, held its inaugural Industry Day in November at the Moller Institute. The event was a great success, bringing together staff, academics, and students to meet the new FIBE3 industry partners for the first time. This candid photo, captured at just the right moment, of new industry partner Alex Winchester, Strategic Improvement Director from Milestone Infrastructure, shaking hands with new Cohort 1 student, Cameron Watson, truly symbolizes the beginning of this new collaboration for FIBE3.

The day opened with presentations by FIBE3 Head and Director, Professor Abir Al-Tabbaa, who introduced the CDT, the directors and core management team and it's industry and academic partners. She also outlined the CDT's vision and the 4 strategic Theme Enablers to unlock Net Zero Infrastructure and the components of the MRes course.

Professor Julian Allwood shared his vision for the initial version of the Roadmap to Net Zero Infrastructure, which will be developed based on the Roadmap to Net Zero project. In this project, students will update the strategy report with guidance from academics and industry partners. Each cohort of students will build upon the previous cohort's report, providing research insights and a foundation for strategic analysis of the Roadmap. Later, we had breakout sessions where delegates could discuss the posters presented by Prof. Allwood and share their thoughts using post-it notes on each poster.

Lunch took place at the stunning 360-degree Tower Lounge, providing delegates with ample networking opportunities. The afternoon session of the Autumn Industry Day featured brief presentations from industry partners, who introduced themselves and their companies. Additionally, Cohort 1 delivered Pecha-Kucha style presentations about themselves and their research.

As the event concluded, excitement and optimism filled the air. The connections made and knowledge shared highlighted a promising future. With everyone's dedication and innovation, we're on the path to unlocking the potential of a Net Zero Infrastructure. Here's to many more successful collaborations!
