This unique 4-year programme, delivered in close partnership with industry, equips talented researchers from diverse backgrounds to become future leaders tackling the urgent challenge of net-zero infrastructure. Building on Cambridge’s global strengths in engineering and science, the programme offers cutting-edge training and research that blend rigorous theoretical knowledge, advanced technical skills, and a collaborative, solution-driven mindset to advance the UK’s net-zero agenda. Our net zero infrastructure training and research is developed around the FIBE3 CDT Roadmap under the umbrella of four main net zero enabling themes of:
- Current and disruptive technologies
- Circularity and whole life approach
- Al-driven digitalisation and data
- Risk-based systems thinking and connectivity

Programme Structure
During the MRes year, you will be introduced to a high level big picture view of both the challenges and solutions to net zero infrastructure, build a strong foundation through cohort-based and personalised training and co-develop a detailed research plan with your academic supervisor and industry sponsor.
The PhD 3-year study will focus on a challenging research question agreed with your supervisor and industry sponsor that aligns with the remit of the FIBE3 CDT objectives and roadmap. A range of wider opportunities will enrich your training and research and ensures that your research is impactful and your skills are future-ready through the engagement with the collective FIBE3 CDT industry partners.
