FIBE3 CDT hosted a recruitment event with a Valentine’s Day twist - a chance for students to fall head over heels for their perfect PhD. Aimed at 4th‑year undergraduates and Master’s students in the Engineering Faculty, the session invited them to “speed‑date” with our current CDT students and academics to discover their research soulmate within our Unlocking Net Zero theme.
We also invited 3rd‑year undergraduates, giving them an early opportunity to spark a connection and start planning their future - because it’s never too soon to find “the one” (PhD, that is!).
Armed with a colourful spread of posterboards showcasing the CDT’s story, from highlights across 12 cohorts and three successive CDTs to snapshots of wellbeing events, Cambridge Festival outreach, our students’ many achievements and awards, secondments to awe-inspiring MIT or global locations, we created a delightful smorgasbord of inspiration. It offered potential PhD candidates a tempting taste of the vibrant community and opportunities that await them in our programme.
The recruitment event was a resounding success, with a lively buzz as students explored potential research “matches.” Many left with clear ideas and even early favourites for PhD projects aligned with our Unlocking Net Zero theme. With multiple studentships led by solution‑driven, impact‑focused industry supervisors from Network Rail, Tracy Concrete, AtkinsRealis, Ramboll, Ward and Burke, Cam Dragon, Buro Happold and beyond, we’re optimistic that these collaborative opportunities will soon be filled, forging new partnerships and advancing real‑world Net Zero research.
