About
Lama AlGhamdi is an MRes + PhD student at the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Future Infrastructure and Built Environment (FIBE3 CDT). Her PhD research, supervised by Prof. Abir Al-Tabbaa, focuses on developing nature-inspired bio-cement technologies as a sustainable alternative to conventional cement, with the aim of reducing the carbon footprint of the construction industry.
Lama holds a BSc in Biology with a specialisation in Microbiology from King Abdulaziz University, and an MSc in Bioscience from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). Her master’s research was conducted in the Marine Microbiomes Laboratory at KAUST and focused on beneficial, microorganism for corals and the use of biotechnology to mitigate coral bleaching. Through this work, she developed a strong interest in sustainability-driven, nature-based solutions.
Her current research brings together microbiology, biotechnology, and civil engineering within the broader CDT theme of “Unlocking Net Zero.” Outside of academia, Lama enjoys water-based activities such as scuba diving, snorkelling, and kayaking. She has also volunteered as a Radio Marshal at the Saudi Arabian Formula 1 Grand Prix since 2022 and hopes to continue this role in the UK during her studies.
